Crypto payments: speed, anonymity and tax

Crypto payments are marketed with three words: fast, anonymous and tax-free. The first is partly true. The other two are not true at all, and this article explains why.

Speed: what actually gets faster

A payment has two stages, and crypto affects only one of them. The first is the operator's own review, which can take anywhere from minutes to several days and is where identity verification happens. The second is the transfer, and on the blockchain that is a matter of minutes. When a payment is delayed, the cause is almost always in the first stage – and the payment method has no bearing on it.

Anonymity: there is none

A blockchain is a public ledger: every transfer is permanently visible. Addresses are not names, but they connect to a person the moment funds pass through an exchange or the operator runs its verification. Know-your-customer obligations apply to crypto exactly as they do to cards.

Tax: it does not vanish into a wallet

Two separate things get confused here. First, how a gambling win is taxed depends on where the operator is based and under which licence it works – not on the instrument used to pay it out. Second, disposing of a virtual currency is in many countries a taxable event in its own right, including when the currency is used to pay for something. Both questions are answered by the tax authority of your country of residence.

Four risks instead of one

Component What happens in it Who controls it
The result of play The house edge plays out over the long run Nobody
Exchange rate Value moves between payments The market
Transfer fees Vary with network congestion The network, not the site
Conversions The spread between buy and sell rates The exchange or payment provider

Network and address: two mistakes that cannot be undone

A crypto transfer has no bank-style recall procedure. Two mistakes recur: sending on the wrong network and sending to the wrong address. The same ticker can exist on several networks, and if the receiving service does not support the network you chose, the funds may not be recoverable. Copy the address rather than typing it, and check the opening and closing characters before confirming.

Verification: what it takes

  • Photo identification with the picture and expiry date fully visible.
  • Proof of address, typically no more than three months old.
  • Ownership of the payment method: for crypto, usually a screenshot of the wallet or exchange account.
  • For larger sums, a statement on the source of funds.

The most common reasons for rejection are mechanical: a corner of the image is cropped, the document has expired, or the name differs from the name on the account. Each one restarts the review.

In coin models crypto is not a payment method for play

If a platform runs on coins, crypto may be a way to buy a coin package – but the coins themselves are not money, and some of them cannot be redeemed at all. The exchange-rate risk then enters at the moment of purchase, and it cannot be ”withdrawn back” the way it can at a money casino. Read the terms before buying.

Questions

Do the odds improve with crypto?

No. The return is identical regardless of the currency a payment was made in.

Should I keep a balance in crypto?

That is an investment decision, not a gambling one. If you would not want to hold the same sum in crypto without playing, there is no reason to hold it there because of play either.

What if a payment is delayed?

Check verification, whether the payment method matches, and whether a bonus wagering requirement is still open. After that, ask support in writing and keep the reply.
